The National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) is calling for proposals for 2024 NSFC Special Project: Frontier Exploration of Engineering Science Empowered by Artificial Intelligence 2024年度国家自然科学基金专项项目“人工智能赋能工程科学前沿探索”

Core Scientific Issues:

This project focuses on the core scientific issues of mechanism design and governance methods in data markets, specifically including the following two aspects:

1. Multi-scale Artificial Intelligence Modeling Methods for Complex Engineering Systems.
2. Efficient and High-Precision Artificial Intelligence Computation for High-Dimensional Strongly Nonlinear Engineering Systems.

What to Fund and Funding Plans

1. The funding period is 2 years.
2. The project research period should be filled as “January 1, 2025 – December 31, 2026.”
3. Approximately 5 general projects are planned to be funded, with an expected funding amount of about 2 million RMB per project.
4. Approximately 15 youth projects are planned to be funded, with an expected funding amount of about 1 million RMB per project.

Eligibility and Quota Requirements::

1. Applicants for general projects must hold a senior professional technical position (title) 高级专业技术职务（职称）.
2. Applicants for the youth projects must be male and under 35 years old (born after January 1, 1989), and female and under 38 years old (born after January 1, 1986).
3. Applicants should have experience in undertaking basic research projects in engineering science (at least having one NSFC project experience).
4. Priority will be given to researchers with backgrounds in both engineering science and information science who apply jointly.
5. Applications solely focused on AI or traditional engineering methods will not be supported.
6. This special project is not included in the total limit of 2 projects that can be applied for or undertaken.
7. Before filling out the application form, applicants should carefully read this project guide and the relevant content of the “2024 NSFC Guidelines.” Applications that do not comply with the project guide and related requirements will not be accepted.

2. The application should highlight specific goals and key breakthroughs, without needing to cover all aspects of the guidelines. It should clearly state the contribution to achieving the overall scientific objectives of the special project and addressing its core scientific issues.
