Mr. Zhang is the Founder, Chairman and CEO of Hillhouse Capital Management Group (HCM), a long long-term fundamental equities investor. As one of Asia’s top funds, Hillhouse manages more than
$12 billion for endowments (such as Yale, Stanford, Harvard, etc.), foundations, family offices (such as the Ford Foundation, the Rothschild Family Fund, etc.), pensions, and sovereign funds. HCM commits to long-term investments in shares, with rigorous bottom-up methods and investment philosophy, investing in opportunities for public and private markets covering a variety of industries.
Before founding the HCM, Mr. Zhang served as the first Chief Representative of the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) in China and built Branch Offices in Hong Kong and Beijing. Prior to that, he was in Global Emerging Markets Fund, in charge of investment in South Africa, Southeast Asia and China. During Yale University, Mr. Zhang worked at Yale’s investment office (management of prestigious Yale University Endowment Fund).
Mr. Zhang earned an MBA and M.A. from Yale University and a B.A. from Renmin University of China, where he is the Vice Chairman and Trustee of the Board. He currently serves on the University Council at Yale University. In addition, Mr. Zhang is a Trustee of the Brookings Institution.
Mr. Zhang is a board member of Jing Dong (JD.com), the biggest Chinese Internet B2C retailer; Qunar, the biggest Chinese travel website; Blue Moon, No.1 Chinese household and personal care company; Southern fund management company; and Global Mediacom, Indonesia’s largest media and television conglomerate. He is one of finance and capital board members of World Economic Forum (Davos Forum). He designed the internationalization of WeChat (weixin), one of the biggest social media in the world. Lei is also the sole facilitator and investor for the strategic collaboration among Baidu, Tencent and JD.com.
Mr. Zhang spent a lot of time focusing on education issues. He is a Member of the Board of BN Vocational School, and one of founding directors for the United World College of Southeast Asia (UWCSEA). In addition, he donated and established the Hillhouse Academy in Renmin University of China, designed to carry forward the role of liberal education in Chinese universities.
