Major Campus Programs

Mid-autumn Festival Celebration

The Mid-Autumn Festival has been celebrated in many East Asian countries  for thousands of years as a time for families to gather. The most popular festivity on this day is moon-watching, where although sometimes you are not able to be with your family and friends physically, you know they are looking at the same full moon and thinking of you. At DKU, there will be booths of various traditional Mid-Autumn Festival activities and games for students to learn about East Asian culture and celebrate the festival together!

Halloween Party and Haunted House

Get ready for the biggest, most-anticipated party of the year! Hosted by the Campus Activities Board, you will get the chance to carve pumpkins, trick-or-treat, enter the costume competition, play games, and take photos with your friends. And don’t forget to visit our super-scary haunted house for a thrilling adventure!

Thanksgiving Dinner

Most days at school, students serve themselves, but for this year’s Thanksgiving Dinner, the tables will be turned: DKU staff members will serve students, family-style, in a traditional autumn meal that is sure to be remembered. It’s a dedicated time to  reflect on what you are thankful for after a great start to the school year. Most students head home for Thanksgiving break to spend time with their families., so DKU’s traditional dinner falls on the Friday before Thanksgiving.

When you see the turkey and trimmings, stuffing, mashed potatoes, and gravy—you’ll reminisce upon the Thanksgiving memories of your past whilst sharing the moment with your adopted DKU family.

Lunar New Year Celebration

The Lunar New Year marks the grandest festival in China. As such, DKU is dedicated to providing students from all cultural backgrounds with the opportunity to learn about Chinese Spring Festival culture. By participating in a series of activities such as gala and reunion dinners, lantern riddle-solving, and visiting temple fairs, students will experience a staple of Chinese culture in this grand week.

The Spring Festival Fair will consist of several activity booths, including paper cutting, dumpling making, Spring Festival couplets writing, and much more. Students who are not on campus can join synchronously on Zoom. In addition to hands-on activities, participants can hunt for clues in our exclusive problem-solving game, where the mission is to find lost DKU bears.

The Lunar New Year celebration will feature a wide array of performances by students as well as community performers. Students will take the stage and showcase their musical talents by playing a selection of traditional Chinese music  and singing popular Cantonese songs. The Deka String Quartet, consisting of students from Stony Brook University’s Department of Music, will perform well-known Chinese classics and songs like Jasmine, Happy New Year, and Butterfly Lovers.
