Formative Class Observation

To support the pilot mandatory class observation process for DKU faculty’s tenure, reappointment, and promotion reviews, the Peer Evaluation Ad Hoc Committee saw the importance of having a formative version of such a class observation process facilitated by peer faculty members and/or the Center for Teaching and Learning to focus on peer feedback for improvement.

This formative process, which is voluntary based, allows faculty to select their own peer observers, utilizes the same observation rubric as the one for the mandatory process, and suggests a post observation meeting for faculty to receive constructive peer feedback and have an opportunity to brainstorm strategies to address issues. Faculty are strongly encouraged to participate in the formative process early enough to help them prepare for the mandatory class observation. Faculty may also use the final observation report generated from the formative process as supplementary evidence of teaching to support their reviews.
