Abstract
This presentation will introduce ongoing research at the Collaborative Research Center “Global Dynamics of Social Policy” (CRC 1342) at the University of Bremen, Germany. A large group of researchers here is investigating global dynamics and patterns of public social policy since the 1880s, encompassing a broad understanding of the welfare state and a global perspective that leaves the national container. The central thesis of the CRC 1342 is that the type and density of international and transnational interdependencies – in interaction with the national constellation in politics, society and the economy – shape the dynamics and patterns of national social policy. The presentation will provide insights into the China project at the CRC 1342 and some of its findings. This includes the identification of the causal mechanisms that led to the introduction of social insurance schemes in the 1990s and early 2000s.
This event is part of the lecture series of the Center for the Study of Contemporary China Governing China Cluster.
