About the Filmmaker

Dongnan Chen is an independent filmmaker from Xi’an, China, and a graduate of NYU. Her film debut, “Sound of Vision” (2012), is an experimental short following a blind man’s exploration of New York, which was nominated for an Emmy, premiered at Hot Docs, and was broadcast on PBS. “Singing in the Wilderness”(2021), her first feature documentary, tells the story of a Miao ethnic choir on the upland of southwest China. The film has won special jury prizes in various locations and was broadcast on NHK, KBS, and PTS. Her latest short, “14 Paintings,” premiered at IDFA, Sundance, and Xining First.
