China’s New Development Strategies: Moving Up and Moving Abroad in Global Value Chains

Over the past several decades, China has experienced one of the fastest and most profound economic development surges in history. In the 1990s and 2000s, China became the export powerhouse of the world across a very diverse range of manufacturing industries, from labor-intensive consumer goods sectors like apparel, footwear, toys, sporting equipment and household appliances to more capital-intensive and technologically advanced industries like computers, smartphones, automotive products and shipbuilding.

Sino-U.S. Relations: Synergies, Opportunities, and Challenges

The formal launch of the Center for the Study of Contemporary China happens on 11-12 January 2019, with a conference that brings together highly prominent international affairs experts based in Beijing, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and the United States to share their perspectives on synergies, opportunities, and challenges in the changing relationship between China and the United States. Faculty experts and students at Duke Kunshan University as well as other stakeholders join this important and timely discussion. 

Conference Series: China on the Move

2019

In 2019–2021, the center will sponsor a series of academic conferences that take as a point of departure the theme China on the Move. Specific conference topics may include, for example, how Chinese industry is moving up the industrial and technological value chain in its production for the domestic and world economy, how migrants within China who are moving across the country are transforming society and posing new challenges for urban management, and how a newly confident China is moving out in its relationships with other countries through its multifaceted One Belt, One Road initiative.
