Time: 3:30 – 5:30 pm

Location: Residence Hall, Block 1 Game Room

The following announcement is adapted fromAustin Woerner's Memory Palace .

The next book selection for the DKU Intercultural Book Club is The Big Sleep by Raymond Chandler. Chandler was an American-British novelist well known for his “hard-boiled” detective novels, many of which were adapted into feature films.

Here is the description from Austin Woerner’s Memory Palace: “In the lawless world of 1930s Los Angeles, an eccentric millionaire hires private detective Philip Marlowe to look into the affairs of his two strange and beautiful daughters. This book is an icon of detective fiction, and in English the writing is lovely. Fu Weici 傅惟慈, who also translated The Moon and Sixpence, is a highly regarded literary translator, and the Chinese edition comes highly recommended.”

The novel was written in 1939 and adapted for film twice: the first (and most famous) in 1946 and again in 1978.

The books is available in both English and Chinese at DKU Library, and you can stream the 1946 film version via Duke University Library’s Kanopy database.

See you on the 7th of December!
