English Language Testing

Test Score Requirements

If your first language is not English, you must submit scores from either the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or the academic modules of the International English Language Testing System (IELTS). The scores will be a decisive factor during the application review process. We will only admits applicants who have one of the following minimum scores:


IELTS: 7.0

Reporting Your Score

An official copy must be sent to Duke Kunshan University directly from the testing agency.

You will also need to upload anelectronic copy of TOEFL or IELTS score report in the application system to the ‘IELTS’ material folder.


Be sure to take the English Tests in time for official scores to reach Duke Kunshan University.

We will accept Your Best Scores. If you have taken the test more than once, please enter your highest score for each section.

If you have not yet taken the test, please enter the date you are scheduled to take it. 

Valid Dates

Your scores must not be more than two years old from August 1 of the application year. For example, if you are applying for admission of fall 2020, you are expected to submit your application in fall 2019 or spring 2020. In this case, your application year is 2019 and your score report must be dated August 1, 2017, or later.

We do not accept personal copies, attested copies, or notarized copies of test scores.

TOEFL/IELTS Waiver Policy

We offer TOEFL/IELTS waivers to those who meet one of the following conditions.

Are citizens of any of the following countries—

Antigua and Barbuda



Saint Vincent and the Grenadines







New Zealand

Trinidad and Tobago



Saint Kitts and Nevis

the United Kingdom

Have studied fulltime for two years or more at a college or university where the sole language of instruction is English and in a country where English is the primary spoken language. The two years of study must be completed prior to the start of the program.

Have worked full-time for a minimum of two years in Australia, Canada, the United States, or the United Kingdom after receipt of undergraduate degree.


Note: Keep in mind that any admitted student whose first language is not English must take oral and written English placement exams conducted by the English for International Students program at the beginning of the term of matriculation. This is required regardless of whether a TOEFL/IELTS waiver is granted. Depending on the exam results, students are either exempted from or placed into English for Academic Purposes courses. All courses that a student places into are degree requirements.
