Grounded in the colorful history of 1930s Shanghai, “Jazz & Blues a la Shanghai” tells the story of the revival of jazz music in the city since the 1990s. The film focuses on three clubs – The House of Blues & Jazz, the Cotton Club, and the JZ Club, as well as the famed Peace Hotel. It features interviews with their owners and with the musicians and singers who were key players in developing the scene. Featuring live footage of performances by noted musicians including J.Q. Whitcomb, Alec Haavik, Coco Zhao, Jasmine Chen, Theo Croker, the JZ Big Band, Greg Smith and the Royal Hombres, and many others, the film leads viewers deep into the scene to investigate how it developed and what makes Shanghai a unique city for jazz and blues music to thrive and prosper.
