The Second Chair Institution of Chinese Consortium of Universities for Global Health (CCUGH) Holds First Board Meeting at Duke Kunshan University

On Dec 11, 2015, the second chair institution of Chinese Consortium of Universities for Global Health (CCUGH) held its first board meeting at Duke Kunshan University. Seventeen representatives from the 11 board member universities attended this meeting. The board members include (alphabetically) Central South University, Duke Kunshan University, Fudan University, Kunming Medical University, Peking University, Peking Union Medical College, Sun Yat-Sen University, the Chinese University of Hong Kong, the Third Military Medical University, Wuhan University and Zhejiang University. The attendees were primarily leaders, scholars and experts who have contributed actively in the global health field.

Xiaolin Chang, vice chancellor of Duke Kunshan University, welcomed the board meeting attendees. As the second chair institution of CCUGH, said Chang, Duke Kunshan will continue to promote the growth of the consortium and the development of global health in China. Peilong Liu, the first chairman of CCUGH and director of global health department at Peking University, as well as Shenglan Tang, the second chairman of CCUGH and director of global health research center at Duke Kunshan University, also delivered welcome addresses. The board members reviewed the work conducted under the leadership of the first chair institution, discussed its plan in 2016 and the development of CCUGH at the meeting. The board decided to hold the second annual meeting of CCUGH at Duke Kunshan in fall 2016, with around 150 participants from home and abroad. Besides, the board also agreed to actively mobilize leaders and academicians from its member universities to petition National Natural Science Foundation of China, National Social Science Foundation of China, Ministry of Science and Technology and Ministry of Education for their support of global health as an independent discipline, thus promoting the development of research and education of global health in China.

“Currently, CCUGH is at a critical stage of development – the newly released UN Sustainable Development Goals represents an important juncture of developing global health in China. China’s demands on global health will continue to increase in five to ten years,” said Prof. Tang.

Established on November 9th, 2013, CCUGH aims to promote mutually beneficial, long-term partnerships among member universities, assist members in sharing their expertise across education, research, capacity building, social services and international collaborations, and address global health challenges. Duke Kunshan was elected as the second chair institution of CCUGH this August for two years.
