Duke Kunshan Holds Global Health Workshop for Medical Students from Nanjing

Nov. 26, Duke Kunshan faculty and researchers offered over 100 visitors from Nanjing Medical University an opportunity to get a glimpse of the Master of Science in Global Health program (MSc-GH) at Duke Kunshan via a day-long workshop.

Jeffrey Moe, professor of the Practice of Global Health at GHRC, Duke Kunshan University, kicked off the day with a fun-filled lecture on China’s challenging role in global health. He gave a holistic review of the world’s most pressing global health issues, and offered his comments and advice on China’s engagement in global health. The lecture provided the students an opportunity to take a closer look at the current status and future of global health from a researcher’s perspective.

Lectures and classroom learning are just the beginning of what the MSc-GH program has to offer. At Duke Kunshan, every MSc-GH student will have plenty of opportunities for research and field study in Asia or other locations around the world. To give the visitors a fuller taste of the MSc-GH program, Dr. Dong Di delivered a presentation on ‘Global Health Research’, and presented research projects conducted by Duke Kunshan students and researchers to showcase the extensive research opportunities available here. ‘The challenges we are facing now require multi-disciplinary experts from different specialties to work together to conduct global health policy research,’ said Dr. Dong, as she encouraged the students to become a part of the community that is shaping the future of global health.

Professor Patrick Moreton, associate dean for graduate programs, wrapped up the day with a lecture on global leadership. As he pointed out, honesty, forward-looking, competent, and inspiring are the four characteristics of the most admired leaders worldwide. To become the next generation leaders in global health, an interdisciplinary field of study, the students must develop management and communication skills in addition to technical expertise. Instead of ‘feeding’ the students with ready-made content, Professor Moreton encouraged them to discuss and summarize common character traits of successful leaders on their own, allowing the students to experience the Duke Kunshan pedagogical style first-hand.

Besides the lectures, the visiting students also enjoyed a campus tour led by current Duke Kunshan students and had opportunities to interact with the speakers during the Q&A sessions.
