New Funding to Support Three Global Health Research Projects

The Research Hub of Asia Pacific Observatory (APO) on Health Policy and System, hosted by the Global Health Research Center at Duke Kunshan University, has been awarded USD 260,000 to support three new research projects from 2018 to 2019, after the successful completion of three projects from 2016 to 2017. The three research projects, launched in recent months, cover a wide range of topics including e-health, non-communicable disease (NCD) care and migrant health.

The project entitled “Strengthening urban primary healthcare service delivery through the use of eHealth programs in China, Nepal, Philippines and Vietnam [The SUPER Study]’, led by Prof. Lijing Yan, will conduct case studies to systematically document the use of e-health to strengthen urban primary healthcare service delivery for hypertension and diabetes in the four countries.

Another project led by Prof. Chang Liu and Prof. Shenglan Tang, entitled ‘Integrating hospital care with primary care and post-acute care for people with chronic diseases: A comparative study in Singapore, China, the Philippines, India, Vietnam and Fiji’, aims to analyze regional experiences of care integration for people with chronic diseases and identify innovative models of integrating hospital care with primary care and post-acute care in the selected countries.

Dr. Nicola Pocock from International Institute of Global Health at United Nations University, a new partner institution, also leads a project entitled “Health system cultural competency for migrant service utilization in Thailand and Malaysia: a comparative study”. This study involves policy-relevant research on culturally competent health systems to identify promising interventions for improved cultural competency among health workers for migrant service utilization in the two countries.

The three studies are expected to complete at the end of 2019 and will provide evidence for policy development to strengthen health systems in response to the critical challenges of rising NCD burden and healthcare for migrant populations in the Asia-Pacific Region.
