Duke Kunshan Vice Chancellor Haiyan Gao Builds Links with Local Schools

Dec 10th, Prof. Haiyan Gao, vice chancellor for academic affairs of Duke Kunshan University, visited Yangzhou High School of Jiangsu Province and Yangzhou Shuren School (affiliated with Yangzhou Middle School), kicking off a tour of secondary schools in China. ‘Middle and high school education is a key to scaffold college readiness,’ said Prof. Gao. ‘Through this kind of tour, we hope to build connections between Duke Kunshan University and Chinese secondary schools.’

During the meeting with President Yan Jiliang and Vice President Zhu Ruzhong of Yangzhou High School as well as Vice President Dong Aihua and Director of Cultural Exchanges Center, Xu Jian, of Yangzhou Shuren School, Prof. Gao introduced Duke Kunshan University and its curriculum, faculty resources, admissions policies, tuitions, etc.

‘As a pioneer of innovative education, Duke Kunshan University implements a brand new liberal arts and cross-disciplinary education model,’ said Prof. Gao. ‘The forward-looking undergraduate curriculum at Duke Kunshan is designed to foster well-rounded global citizens with a rich cultural identity.’

During the visit, Prof. Gao also met with students at these two schools, answering their questions about scientific research, major selection, career development, student life at Duke Kunshan and Duke University’s Blue Devil basketball team.

Yangzhou High School of Jiangsu Province dates back to 1902 when it was known as Yidong School. Together with Suzhou High School and High School Affiliated with Nanjing University, Yangzhou University is recognized as one of the top three prestigious high schools of Jiangsu province, with over 2300 current students. The school boasts many honorable titles, including the key high school of Jiangsu province and model school of Jiangsu province. Yangzhou Shuren School is a private middle school, which evolved from the junior high department that broke away from Yangzhou High School. Sixteen years’ of robust growth has turned Yangzhou Shuren School into an institution boasting the top students of the region as well as the best middle school education. At present, Yangzhou Shuren School has three departments, namely junior high, senior high, and the international department, with a total of 5597 current students.
