Emerging Infectious Diseases
China has seen recent outbreaks of severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS), avian influenza, dengue fever, and severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome (SFTS). They are caused by viruses, and each have a complex etiology requiring interdisciplinary research approaches. They all move from animals to infect humans. Hence, health care workers and public health researchers must partner with veterinarians, wildlife professionals and even entomologists in understanding them. Food safety issues and the increase in antibiotic-resistant pathogens also require interdisciplinary research. With the rich collaborations of other academic partners from outside of Duke Kunshan University, we expect this Emerging Infectious Diseases research program, with the focus on One Health approach, will bring efforts of multiple disciplines to attain optimal health for people, animals and the environment.
