The Discover program is for novice leaders, primarily first-year students. We will introduce the Social Change Model of Leadership. This model has 7 critical values (known as the 7 C’s) which are organized into 3 categories: Individual, Group, and Community. Within the Individual category include the values of Consciousness of Self, Congruence, and Commitment. Collaboration, Common Purpose, and Controversy with Civility form the Group category. The Community group consists of Citizenship.
The Discover Base Camp sections will meet for 45 minutes each week of a semester. We aim to offer multiple sections each semester. In each section, to optimize learning, we have 10-20 students, 2 staff facilitators, and 1-2 student facilitators. The curriculum teaches and gives students a chance to reflect on and practice each of the 7 Cs. Discover Base Camp exposes students to University leaders through panel sessions and culminates in a group project.
The Discover Expedition experience, the second in the program, enables students to put the theory and learning they gained at Base Camp into practice. There will be infrequent semi-structured gatherings by a staff facilitator, and the locus of control for application and growth will rest primarily on the student. We believe leadership can be improved by experiential activities, so Discover Expedition is designed to focus on leadership practice and is committed to developing and improving leadership skills of all students. We will offer multiple sections of Discover Expedition each semester, as needed. The sections have 1 staff facilitator, 10-20 students, and they meet monthly for 90 minutes.
