The National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) is calling for proposals for the Special Project on Computational Neural Mechanisms of Human Cognitive Processes 人类认知过程的计算神经机制

Priority Areas and What to Fund:

  1. The Special Project is focusing on transforming human cognitive processes into computational models and algorithms, aiming to understand and apply the principles and mechanisms underlying human cognition. This approach drives the development and optimization of artificial intelligence (AI) theories and algorithms.
  2. Funding Focus:
    1. Abstract Representation and Learning Process of Information 信息的抽象表征与学习过程
    2. Cognitive Process of Decision-making 决策的认知过程
    3. Cognitive Processes of Socio-emotional Interaction 社会情感与互动的认知过程
  3. The funding period for this special project is 3 years. In the application, the research duration should be specified as “January 1, 2025 – December 31, 2027.” It is intended to fund 8 to 12 projects, with a funding intensity of RMB 800,000 to 1,200,000 per project.

 

Eligibility:

  1. Experience in undertaking basic research projects or other basic research activities (the applicant should be the PI for at least 1 NSFC research project).
  2. Holding a title of associate professor and above.
  3. Encouragement is given for young researchers under the age of 45 to apply as PI.

 

Quota Requirements:

  1. When applying for this special project, applications from personnel holding senior professional technical positions (titles) will not be counted towards the total limit of 2 projects that they can apply for or undertake. However, from the formal acceptance of the application until the National Natural Science Foundation of China makes a funding decision, as well as after receiving funding, these projects will be included in the total count of 2 projects for personnel with senior professional technical positions.
  2. Applicants and main participants can only apply for or participate in one of these special projects.
  3. Additionally, an applicant may only apply for one research project within the special projects in the same year.
